Translated to English, the phrase “memento mori” means “remember you must die”, but this haunting phrase is anything but morbid. The concept of memento mori has been used in art as a symbolic reminder of the inevitability of death and the need to live one’s life to the fullest.
In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the philosophy of memento mori and examples of memento mori in art, followed by a series of practical demos on ways to use simple sculpture techniques to create your own.
Participants will leave the session with the knowledge and context to create their own memento mori.
It’s not necessary for participants to have all their materials in advance as they’ll be making the final piece in their own time, but it’s suggested to bring tinfoil and masking tape.
The workshop content is suitable for beginners in sculpture, modelling and 3D art; as well as those with an interest in macabre art.
