What is Northern Soul?

Northern soul originated in Northern England and the English Midlands in the late 1960s, when British mod culture became inspired by Black American soul music from the mid-1960s. These songs featured a heavy beat and fast tempo, usually above 100 beats per minute. Northern soul generally rejected popular Motown and Motown-influenced music in favor of lesser-known soul songs, released by American labels such as Vee-Jay Records, Chess Records, Brunswick Records, Ric-Tic, Gordy Records, Golden World Records (Detroit), Mirwood Records (Los Angeles), Shout Records and Okeh. The movement became popular at venues such as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester, the Wigan Casino, Blackpool Mecca’s Highland Room, and the Golden Torch in Stoke-on-Trent, where the associated dance styles and fashions quickly spread.

As northern soul music evolved in the early 1970s, so did the accompanying dance styles. With its more energetic tempo, northern soul dancing became more athletic, marked by spins, flips, karate kicks and backdrops, inspired by the performances of popular American soul acts, such as Little Anthony and the Imperials and Jackie Wilson. To keep the movement alive, prominent DJs began to explore rare and previously overlooked records from the mid-1960s. Gradually, clubs and DJs shifted away from the classic Motown sound, and began to focus on newer, more contemporary releases.

With all the above in mind come on down get with the grooves and show us your moves.
